view of church exterior - southeast view

Scene Description: Source caption: "The church dates from the late 12th century onwards, and was restored in 1933. It is thought there was an earlier Saxon church on the site, as Saxon graves have been excavated nearby. It is situated in an elevated position and is reached by a steep track. It is often known as "The Ramblers' church". There is a west tower, nave with north and south aisles with clerestory, chancel with north vestry, and south porch. The tower dates from the 13th century and is of four stages. All of the church except the chancel is battlemented. There are eight bells. The three bay north aisle dates from circa 1300 and has circular piers. Those of the south arcade are octagonal and date from circa 1200. The clerestory is perpendicular. At the east end of the north aisle there are steps up to the top of the rood screen which was restored in 1933 complete with rood. The south aisle has a series of 18th-century box pews, and is there is an octagonal wooden pulpit of 1626. The font is in poor condition and dates from the 13th century. There is one stained-glass window at the east end of the south aisle showing Christ with ramblers and cyclists. The church was little used from the late 1880s and was nearly demolished due to its inconvenient position which is located on the Viking Way. Thus it escaped major 19th-century restoration."
