Scene Description: Source caption: "St Mary's church, Wainfleet [...] St Mary’s church is a parish church dating from the late 12th century, early 13th century, early 15th century, 18th century with restorations between 1875 and 1892. The church is built of limestone coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and some red brick. The church consists of a west tower, nave, north and south aisles, south porch and chancel with organ chamber."

There are seven entries for Wainfleet [All Saints and St Mary] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/XX0000/wainfleet-all-saints-and-st-mary/] [accessed 20 January 2019] none of which mentions cleric or church in it. The entry for this church in Edmund Oldfield's A topographical and historical account of Wainfleet and the Wapentake of Candleshoe, in the County of Lincoln (London: Longman, [etc.], 1829: p. 76) notes: "The font is octagonal, and bears a close resemblance to the font in the church of All Saints, being adorned with emblematic representations of the sufferings of the redeemer of men." Pevsner, Harris and Antram (1989) note: "Font. Perp[endicular], octagonal, leaves on the stem, four tracery panels and four shields with the instruments of the Passion on the bowl (just as at Wainfleet All Saints)." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: TF4711158672] notes: "Parish church. Late C12, early C13, early C15, C18, restored 1875-92. [...] C15 octagonal font on C19 pedestal, bowl with cusped panels containing shields with emblems of the Passion."
