There are five entries for Moulton [St. Michael] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TM1690/moulton-st-michael/] [accessed 7 May 2014], two of which report a church and churchlands in each. Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "The church is dedicated to St. Michael", and names "Jeffry de Halcote" as first recorded rector of it, in 1303. Lewis' Dictionary of 1848 reports "a font elaborately sculptured" in this church. Noted and illustrated in Knott (2006): "The font is a grand 15th century one with lions and fleurons on the bowl. The stem has been vandalised, and when Mortlock came this way the lions around the base had been replaced with plaster ones. But these are now gone." Noted in Pevsner & Wilson (1999): "C15. Octagonal, with four flowers and the signs of the Evangelists against the bowl." The underbowl chamfer has two levels: the upper one is decorated with the usual angels heads at the angles; the lower one, following the usual arrangement, has rosettes on the sides. Quadrangular plinth with chamfered corners. Flat octagonal wooden cover; appears modern. [NB: we have no iinformation on the font of the original church here].
