The Domesday survey does not mention a church or priest in 'Buchanaham'. Blomefield (1805-1810) reports of a fine levied between tenants of the advowson of this church "In the 10th year of King Richard I" [i.e., 1199], gives the dedication as St. Nicholas' and names "Alan de Hakford" as first recorded rector here, in 1319. Andre (1889) writes: "Buckenham Ferry has on the shaft among other figures those of SS. Margaret and Nicholas, the first being the patroness of motherhood, and the second, the patron of childhood." The present font is noted in Pevsner & Wilson (1997): "Font. Perp[endicular]. Against the stem four statuettes and four seated figures, against the bowl eight seated figures in ogee-arched panels. Well preserved." Simon Knott (2007) notes the similarity with the 15th-century font at Hemblington. Baptismal font probably of the Perpendicular period consisting of an octagonal basin with vertical sides, the panels deeply carved with wide trefoil-headed crocketed arches topped with with crown-like finials; inside each arch a seated figure some (?) holding books and/or other objects; several are identied as Apostles by their symbol; one is a bishop, perhaps St. Nicholas; there is some damage to at least one side of the upper rim [where the cover staple would have been removed?]; the underbowl chamfer is decorated with angel demi-figures holding objects; the stem of the base is octagonal-to-square, the sides of the square decorated with arches similar to those on the basin, but taller and narrower, a standing figure in each; the chamfered sides have standing figures against them, but there are no arches here; the lower base is moulded. There are signs of restoration in some of the panels.
