There are six entries for this Owmby [variant spellings] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TF0087/owmby-by-spital/] [accessed 1 January 2019] none of which mentions cleric or church in it. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: TF0001687351] notes: "Parish Church. C12, c.1200, C13, C14, C16, chancel rebuilt 1808, C20. [...] All other fittings are C19, apart from the font which is made from reused sections of a massive drum pillar, quite out of scale with anything which survives, and of uncertain date. The topmost section is probably a reused and inverted capital of which one plain volute survives." The object in St. Peter and St. Paul's Owmby is a rare one indeed, and it is very unlikely that it was conceived in the present form as a font; perhaps the upper section might have been originally the basin of a font, although, as indicated in the HE notes above, more likely a capital; the object consists of three blocks of rough stone put together with cement to form one tall font, perhaps octagonal, but very rounded now; the upper block has a round inner basin lined with lead [the lining appears modern], and the upper surface of the basin around the lip of the lining is slightly chamfered and well worn. Pevsner, Harris and Antram (1989) write: "Crude, octagonal, with broaches at the corners."
