Lewis' Directory of 1848 noted: "the font is of Caen stone, and elaborately sculptured". Knott [www.suffolkchurches.co.uk/mendlesham.htm] [accessed 19 February 2007] writes: "pressed into service as a holy water stoup is one of the loveliest fonts in the county. It came from Rishangles, when the church there was made redundant and sold off by the money-changers. It has had various claims made for its age, Mortlock unaccountably dating it as 1600; but is must surely be late 19th century." [cf. Index entry for Mendlesham No. 1 for the baptismal font inside the nave and its showy 17th-century cover]. [We are grateful to Simon Knott, of Suffolk Churches, for the photographs of this font]
