There is an entry for Hockering the the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TG0713/hockering/] [accessed 26 March 2014], but it mentions neither church nor cleric in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: " The Church is dedicated to St. Michael, and is a rectory [...] It is a single pile, with a chancel, and a round tower with one bell. [...] About 1232, Reginald occurs rector". The church, however, must have existed earlier since Blomefield (ibid.) refers to a fine levied in relation to the advowson of this church "In the 6th of King John" [1205]. The present font here is reported in Lewis' Dictionary of 1848: "the font [...] is exceedingly handsome, and highly sculptured." Pevsner & Wilson (1999) note: "C15 stem with carved figures, but a C19 bowl." Described and fully illustrated in Knott : "The bowl is Victorian and perfunctory; the shaft is medieval, and wonderful. It depicts eight Saints, standing in niches. Their heads were whacked off by 16th century protestants, and have since been replaced, but they are in the main in good condition, beautifully clear and identifiable. They include St Michael, St Andrew, St Margaret, St Catherine, St Christopher and the Blessed Virgin and child." The upper half of the underbowl chamfer appears to be part of the 19th-century basin, but the lower half is part of the 15th-century base; this earlier part of the chamfer is decorated with seven full angels holding a variety of objects (shield, book, etc.) and one with his hands together in prayer. The saint figures on the stem sides stand in trefoiled arches; the splayed lower base and plinth are octagonal.
