Font Notes:
Noted and illustrated in Cautley (1982) as a baptismal font of the 15th century with heraldic decoration. A description of this font can be found at 'The Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Bures St. Mary, Suffolk, England' [http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~nvjack/fylbrigg/church_of_st_mary.htm] [accessed 7 February 2007], which identifies the font as "typical of the traditional East Anglian fonts of the 15th century", with angels holding harged shields on the basin sides, and the symbols of the Four Evangelists around the stem; this same source reports that the basin appears to have been restored or replaced, but the stem original. The coats-of-arms, on shields held by demi-figure angels, are identified [starting on the east side, right to left]: 1)Tudor Arms of England; 2)De Vere; 3)Fitzralph; 4)Mortimer; 5)De Cornard; 6)Waldegrave; 7)De Bures; 8)Mortimer of Clare. Raguin [http://www.holycross.edu/departments/visarts/projects/anglia/norton/norton.html] [accessed 27 March 2008] notes that it "has on the east the arms of England, and then clockwise arms of de Vere, Fits-ralph, Mortimer, de Cornard, Waldegrave, de Bures, and Mortimer of Clare."
