Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "The Church is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, and hath only a nave and chancel, both which are thatched: the south porch is leaded, the steeple is square, and hath been higher; it is now covered with board, and hath one bell in it. [...] On the font, two keys in saltier, for St. Peter." Blomefield (ibid.) names "Ralf de Banham" first recorded rector/vicar here, in 1293, and cites one entry in Domesday, 'Hakefordam', without a mention of church or priest in it. Lewis' Dictionary of 1848 reports a handsome font in this church. In Pevsner & Wilson (1999): "Octagonal, late C14. Shields in cusped fields and symbols of the Passion." Noted and illustrated in the Kontt (2005): "14th century font with its passion symbols on the shields." The font consists of an octagonal basin with vertical sides decorated with cusped panels inscribing each a charged shield; the emblems on the shield do not however appear to be the traditional ones of the Instruments of the Passion; only two may have a religious connotation: one with crossed keys, the other with three chalices or cups; the chamfered underbowl is decorated with a blank shield on each side; the octagonal stem has very slender colonnettes carved at the corners; the lower base and plinth appear modern.
