Font Notes:
Lewis' Dictionary of 1848 notes: "in the south porch, a stoup of elegant design". In Pevsner & Wilson (1999) with 15th-century date: "Decorated like the stem of a font". Noted and illustrated in Knott (2005): "A surprise in the porch is the elaborate 15th century holy water stoup set on a fluted pillar", which Knott wonders "perhaps it is from nearby Wymondham Abbey, and was placed here by the Victorians." The stoup consists of a polygonal basin now half-built into the wall, the sides vertical and decorated with floral motifs -each different from the others- inscribed in quadrangular panels; the piping of the corners continues down down the constructional stem; the lower base, which also appears constructional, has the usual horizontal mouldings. The backdrop and canopy area a rather uncommon feature in stoups of this period in England.
