Noted in Lewis' Dictionary of 1848: "the font is of Caen stone, beautifully sculptured". Noted in Parker (1855) as an octagonal font of the Perpendicular period with the symbols of the Evangelists on the basin sides. Octagonal mounted baptismal font of the type known as Evangelists' font; the symbols of the four Evangelists appear deeply carved on alternate panels of the basin, the other four panels filled with angels holding objects; the angles of the underbowl appear to have had demi-angels (?); there were figures around the stem (usually, in East Anglia, either saints, woodwooses, animals, etc.) but they have been damaged. The font stands on a tiny two-step plinth, the lower step with kneeling-stone prologation. Octagonal wooden cover, flat except at the centre where there is a raised base for the knob finial. Simon Knott (2008) notes that this was Dowsing's final port of call, where "he hacked off the devotional imagery on the afternoon of October 1st 1644". The font itself suffered from the the iconoclastic zeal, but, curiously enough, it appears that the lions of the base suffered the worst. Prts of the basin appear to have been re-tooled, perhaps re-carved.
