Allen (1833) writes: "The font is octagonal, but not very ancient, it is placed on an ascent of three steps." Noted in Pevsner, Harris and Antram (1989): "The present font octagonal, Perp[endicular] with restless blank tracery including bits of crenellation." Parkinson's 'History of St Guthlac's Church' [www.fishtoftchurch.org.uk] [accessed 5 February 2007] notes: "The font was moved to the east end of the north aisle from the west central end of the nave [...] in 1973" [NB: this web site includes recent photographs of the font and its cover]. The octagonal basin has multiple versions of small multi-lobed windows below a band of crenellation around the upper basin side; the underbowl is chamfered and decorated with a rosette at each angle between two mouldings; a band of crenellation decorates the upper end of the stem; below, on each face of the stem, an arch or window with pinnacled round arch-head; the splaying lower base is moulded. The Jacobean-style wooden cover is of the four-ribs-around-a-pivot design, with a cross finial. The whole is raised on a two-step octagonal plinth.
