Font Notes:
The Domesday survey has two entries for Cockthorpe [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TF9842/cock-thorpe/] [accessed 11 December 2013], but neither mentions a church or cleric in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) notes: "The Church is dedicated to All-Saints [...] In 1321, Ralph Bacon was instituted rector presented by Roger Bacon of Baconsthorp", and the earliest mention of the church he makes is in relation to a transaction "excepting the advowson of the church [...] in 13 - -". The present font is noted in Lewis' Dictionary of 1848: "a handsome sculptured font". Farrer (1887 [1885?]) notes: "Shields on the Font. II. Plain. -- III. A saltire couped, St. Andrew. -- IV. Three escallops, St. James. -- V. Shield of the Passion. -- VI. Emblem of the Trinity. -- VII. Two keys in saltire, St. Peter. -- VIII. Two swords in saltire, St. Paul. -- IX A cross, St. George." Described in Pevsner & Wilson (1997): "Font. Octagonal. Of yelowish limestone, probably early C17. Shields exhibiting the Symbol of the Trinity, the Instruments of the Passion, crossed keys and crossed swords, two different crowns, and three shells." [NB: we have no information on the font of the early-14th century church here].
