Font Notes:
There is an entry for Catcott in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/ST3939/catcott/] [accessed 24 April 2018], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Lewis' Dictionary of 1848 reports "a very fine old font" in this church. Drawing of a font in the Harvey Pridham Drawings of English Fonts (MS 56). [Folder Number, Item Description]. University of Colorado at Boulder Libraries. Special Collections Dept., done by Harvey Pridham on 1 August 1888 accompanied by the following description: "Octagonal bowl supported by a central shaft having 4 engaged demi-shafts clustered round it at the cardinal points: under this a circular plinth. See sketch book for plan. Circular bowl inside, lead lined; vertical sides, flat plan: 10" deep; 3 3/8 margin. Poor cover." [NB: the entry is mis-labeled 'Calcott']. Noted in Wade & Wade (1929): "an old octagonal font". Not mentioned in Pevsner (1958). The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Somerset, vol. 8, 2004), in its description of Catcott Chapel, notes: "The font is also of the 13th century, its circular bowl on a base with attached shafts"; however, an illustration in the same source captioned "Catcott church pews with extra seats for special occasions", shows the narrow aisle with the said folding seats and, to the left, a stone font, not round and with attached shafts, as described in the text, but consisting of an octagonal basin of vertical sides, an octagonal stem and a narror splaying lower base. Are there two fonts in this chapel? According to the same source, the font was refitted with a [new?] cover in the 17th century. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: ST3941639283] reports: "Late C13 plain octagonal font, circular shaft with 4 small circular attached shafts."
