There are seven entries for Clippesby [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TG4214/clippesby/] [accessed 26 May 2014], but neither mentions a church or priest in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "Osbert de Salicibus, alias de Willows, was lord in the reign of Henry II. and in the 9th of King John, Henry was lord and patron of the church of Clippesby, (as the jury find,) and that his father Osbert presented the last rector [...] The Church is a rectory dedicated to St. Peter. It is therefore likely that there was a church here by the mid-12th century, if not earlier, as indicated by the Norman tower. The present font here is noted in Pevsner & Wilson (1997): "Font. C15. Octagonal, panelled stem, demi-figures of angels against the underside of the bowl, bearing books." The octagonal basin has blank side panels that may have been originally painted, separated by half-buttresses; the sides of the octagonal stem have simple tracery; the lower base is octagonal and narrow, moulded. The wooden cover is round and has a flat Latin cross handle; appears modern. The whole is raised on an octagonal plinth. [NB: the tower has both Saxon -now covered- and Norman windows, but we have no information on the font of the early church here].
