Baptismal font made of cast brass by Mante Pelking [aka Mante Pelckinck / Mante Pelkinck], from Hildesheim; the sides of the basin are decorated with six scriptural scenes in panels framed by moulded columns, each scene annotated with a reference to the appropriate biblical source: : 1)infant baptism; 2)Peter heals Eneas and raises up Tabitha to life; 3)Peter's sermon; 4)Resurrection of Christ; 5)Baptism of Christ; 6)Paul's visits and preaching; underbowl decorated with a ribbed pattern; the round stem of the base is divided into two parts by a protruding moulding bearing an inscription on the sides, all around, bearing on it the date of the font; above and below two rows of Apostles, six in each, carrying their identifying symbols; wide circular lower base has upper surface patterned with inscriptions and coats of arms related to Town Hall and its councillors responsible for the donation of the font [NB: the font was originally donated to the Universitätskirche, Helmstedt]; there is a thin moulding at the angle and a runing inscription on the side below it; like the inscription above this one appears to related to the town and its authorities; the whole rests on a stone plinth. The font cover is also made of brass and has six biblical scenes inscribed in trefoil arch-heads above a band of frilly open-work on the domed lower volume; the scenes include: 1)Peter's vision and conversion of centurion Cornelius; 2)Noah's ark and the Flood; 3)Jesus and Nicodemus; 4)the water source in the Temple; 5)Philip baptizes the Ethiopian eunuch; 6)Moses crossing the Red Sea; in the spandrels of the arcade stand six putto-like human figures with arms akimbo, the lower part of their bodies in the shape of a leaf; atop each arch is a pointed acorn motif; a baluster-shaped moulded pedestal stands on the dome; the top volume is a scene of the Trinity in which God the Father, wearing a prophet's hat, holds in his arms a wounded Christ who has the avian Holy Ghost standing on his head; they all appear to stand on a large orb in an odd balancing act. The hook-up to the pulley is just above God the Father's hat. The cover itself is suspended by a chain in the vault floor and there balanced by a counterweight for raising it.
