Font Notes:
Illustrated in The Topographer (1790). Noted in Lewis' Dictionary of 1848 simply as "an ancient font". In Parker (1855) as "a good octagonal font". The font consists of an octagonal basin with vertical sides decorated with foiled panels with inscribed motifs and symbols; four sides have octafoil panels with blank shields inscribed, alternating with the other four with foliage or floral motifs inscribed in quatrefoils [NB: these latter motifs appear to resemble foliated crosses]; the lower edge of the basin is moulded, and there are mouldings on the underbowl, stem and lower base. The font could well date from the same period as the building, which Lewis (ibid.) dates to the 14th century. [NB: the fabric of the building goes back to the 12th century, but we have no information on the earlier font of this church]
