Font Notes:
This font is not mentioned in Lewis' Dictionary of 1833 but the National Gazetteer of 1868 reports "a curious Norman font" in Llanegryn. The entry in the RCAHM's An Inventory of the Ancient Monuments in Wales and Monmouthshire, VI. County of Merioneth, (London: HMSO, 1921) illustrates (fig. 22) the font here. Noted and illustrated in Thurlby (2006): "at Llanegryn scallops are applied to a round bowl". The basin is rather strange-looking, with an almost round section but otherwise squared, as if trimmed; raised on a plain round pedestal; the cover appears old and has the locking hardware still on.
