Lewis' Dictionary of 1848 reports "an octagonal font of Norman design" in North Somercoates [sic] St. Peter's. [NB: Lewis (ibid.) gives the dedication of North Somercoates [sic] as St. Peter and South Somercoates [sic] as St. Mary. The entry for South Somercoates notes "a curious font of octagonal shape", and Lewis normally uses the term curious for fonts of complex or busy ornamentation, in this case the one at North Somercotes St. Mary's -- it appears that the churches have been mixed up in Lewis']. Pevsner, Harris and Antram (1989) wrire: "Font. Big, octagonal, Perp[endicular]. Fleuron frieze, shield with the Instruments of the Passion, heads on the underside. The cover is Perp[endicular] too, quite simple, but with a finial." [cf. Index entry for North Somercotes for more details on the fonts at these churches]
