Font Notes:
Noted and illustrated in Upcott (1818). Described in Pevsner (1984): "Font. Square, with raised angle strips. Four original corner shafts with coarse C13 detail." The Leicestershire Parish Councils site [www.hobywithrotherbypc.org.uk] notes "the curious aquare font (this has four different legs and stands on a marble slab with Latin engravings, which possibly outdates the church building)" [NB: the slab is actually part of the flooring, and is not related to the font]. The entry for this church in CRSBI [https://www.crsbi.ac.uk/view-item?i=9991] [accessed 30 June 2025] notes: "The font stands alongside a pier of the S aisle, and has a square bowl with panelled sides. It stands on four square corner shafts, all differently treated and all with square capitals and bases of a 13thc type, and these stand on a circular step. The SE leg has nailhead on its angles, the SW has 4 clustered shafts, the NW has shafts on the angles, and the NE has chamfered angles. There are traces of red paint on the S face of the bowl and on the NW and SW legs but this may not be original. The bowl may be 12thc, although it appears to match the shafts. The bowl is lead lined [...] The font appears 12thc but may be later". The CRSBI entry [cf. supra] contains three images of the full font.
