No entry found for Hungerford Newtown in the Domesday survey. "A William IV carved limestone font, circa 1830, of ocatagonal section, the basin with lead lining, five of the sides with quatrefoils in recessed relief with floral centres, the underside with further foliate detail; the plinth with a Gothic arch to each side, above an octagonal base, 118cm high, 78cm wide, (damage to the base); with later octagonal oak cover with wrought iron ring handle, circa 1900. Provenance: Saint Mary's Church, Hungerford New Town, Berkshire. Note: It is probable that this font was removed to St Mary's from Holy Trinity, Denford, when this latter church received a new font in 1912."
