Font Notes:
Reported in Lewis' Dictionary of 1848: "the font is richly panelled in the later English style". In Whellan (1849) as a "richly panelled octagonal font". Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer... (1870-1872) notes: "a later English octagonal font" in this church. The Victoria County History (Northampton, vol. 3, 1930) notes: "The churches of St. Peter, the Holy Sepulchre and All Saints are all, as we have seen, probably as old as the Norman Conquest. [...] Bishop Hugh of Lincoln's charter [...] specifies nine by name: All Saints', St. Giles', St. Michael's, Holy Sepulchre, St. Mary's (by the Castle), St. Gregory's, [...] St. Peter's, St. Edmund's and St. Bartholomew's, as well as the chapel of St. Thomas. All these churches then were in existence by 1200 [...] The church of St. Giles [was...] originally built early in the 12th century [...] The octagonal stone font is said to be partly of 15th century date, (fn. 143) but nearly all the carving is modern." [the VCH entry has a footnote: "Serjeantson, op. cit. 161. An old font had, however, been removed in 1654: ibid. 57."] [NB: we have no information of the font of the original church here].
