Font Notes:
Illustrated in Guleken (1896). Noted and illustrated in Tuulse (1949) as a baptismal font of the mid-13th century in the parish church at Valjala. Noted and illustrated in Maiste (2007) [NB: the old photograph, ca. 1896 [cf. Guleken supra], shows the font outside the church, in front of the main door]. The font consists of a hemispherical basin with two broad parallel bands of foliage scroll, one on the upper basin side, the other on the underbowl, the space in between blank, raised on a cluster of a broad central shaft with four outer colonnettes with moulded capitals and bases, and a lower moulded square base [the base appears slightly different from the one shown later in Tuulse; perhaps it was re-tooled at a later date in the 20th century]. The basin and its decoration belong to a style of the period not uncommon in the northern fonts of Germany and Scandinavia; although the two main bands of decoration are vegetal (complex vines on the side and on the underbowl, the one on the underbowl has at list one hiuman figure caught in ine of the spandrels of the vine [cf. ImagesArea]. [NB: the Saaremaa web site [www.saaremaa.e] states: "there are two massive baptismal fonts [in this church], one originally belonged to Haapsalu church, and one that belonged to Põide church]. The silver-plated brass baptismal dish is late-19th or early-20th century; even though its design includes a base it is presumably used as an insert into the medieval stone font. A communication to BSI from Pol Herman (e-mail of 19 September 2022) notes: The baptismal font is one of the most notable features of the church. It is one of the oldest pieces of carved stonework in Estonia. Scholars believe that it was made for Haapsalu Cathedral but somehow later found its way to Valjala. The font is decorated with expressive Romanesque sculptures. It is believed that the artist was a Westphalian master.
