Font Notes:
The Victoria County History (Northampton, vol. 4, 1937) has this as a modern font: "with a circular bowl elaborately carved in 'late Norman' style", but gives the date of the lower part of the tower as "late-12th-century". Pevsner & Cherry (1973) however: "Font. Big, Norman." The SCRAN databse [www.scran.ac.uk] lists a painting of this font [w/ ref. to the Northamptonshire Libraries and Information Service (4XL RAPID)]. The font consists of a square basin with motifs inside an arcade of round arches, raised on a patterned cylindrical stem, and a lower base decorated with zig-zag motif; square plinth, probably modern. Described and illustrated in the Corpus of Romanesque Sculpture in Britain and Ireland (2008) as "stylistically 12thc. but suspiciously crisp and regularly carved." [NB: if this font is modern, we have no information on the earlier font of the original Norman church]
