Drawing of a font in the Harvey Pridham Drawings of English Fonts (MS 56). [Folder Number, Item Description]. University of Colorado at Boulder Libraries. Special Collections Dept., done by Harvey Pridham in July 1888 accompanied by the following description: "Octagonal, circular bowl. Lead lined, sides nearly vertical within - (same rake as outside), flat at bottom, 10 1/4 deep, 4 1/4 margin; Position, under open W. T. arch. Modern cover." Wade & Wade (1929) report "a holy-water stoup inside the S. door, and an ancient font" in this church. Not mentioned in Pevsner (1958). The undated 'Short guide' at the church [http://www.ruishton.org.uk/gallery/images/church/thorn_church_guide.pdf] [accessed 30 September 2009] notes and illustrates the font as belonging to the 13th century. Stokes (1981) notes: "There was a church on this site by the second half of the 13th century; the font certainly belongs to that period". The font consists of a rather narrow octagonal basin with a tall underbowl chamfer, raised on an octagonal stem and an octagonal plinth; all parts appear totally devoid of ornamentation. Round wooden cover with ball finial/handle; also plain.
