Font Notes:
There is an entry for [Castle] Combe in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/ST8477/castle-combe/] [accessed 4 November 2018] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. A baptismal font here is illustrated in Scrope (1852). Described and illustrated in Buck (1951): "This font is of two periods. The lower portion is of thirteenth century date [NB: this was corrected by Buck at a later date to "renewed during the 1851 restoration"] and consists of a centre and four outer columns, between which latter is a convex pierced screen of dog-tooth ornament; the thirteenth century font at Streetly, Beds, has a similar lower part, the dog-tooth ornament being one of the Early Englis period, though not often seen on fonts. The bowl, or upper portion of the font, is, howver, of fourteenth century date, as indicated by the cusped ogee arches on seven of the side panels, also by the quatrefoil on the eight panel under the book-rest and by the winged heads on the chamfer below the sides of the bowl.. The book-rest is unusual, and although it was part of the original design of the bowl, as is proved by the arrangement of the carving underneath it, it had been broken off at some time. As it was probably broken into several pieces, the present book-rest was made to replace it. There is a book-rest on the font at Runham, Norfolk, but in other cases, such as Wraxall, Somerset,; Sonning, Berks; Beckley, Oxon., and Gillingham, Kent, the stone book-rest is attached to the pillar alongside which the font has been placed." Noted in Pevsner & Cherry (1975): "Font. A C14 bowl with eight blank ogee arches, demi-figures against the bottom of the bowl, and a fine, C13 support of short piers and big open-work four-petalled flowers, or should one say ornamental dog-tooth?". The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: ST8415677189] notes: "church, mostly C15 but with C13 work in chancel and C14 in north-east chapel. Restored c1850-1. [...] remarkable stone font, C14, octagonal bowl with book-rest on quatrefoil base with openwork carved piers." Baptismal font consisting of an octagonal basin with vertical sides decorated with tracery panels, the angles of the underbowl with cherubs; the base has four slender columns with simple capitals and bases, and, between them, an intricate web pattern of open-work made of vegetal motifs. The wooden cover is octagonal and flat, with metal decoration and handle; probably Victorian.
