No individual entry for Boston found in the Domesday survey. Allen (1833) writes: "The font mentioned by Leland, is replaced by a modern one of very indifferent design; it stands in the proper situation, namely near the western end of the nave, exactly opposite to the north and south doors." Described in Pevsner, Harris and Antram (1989): "Font. Elaborately Victorian Dec[orated]. By E. W. Pugin, and given by Beresford Hope in 1853. The font was described in Mrs Hawthorne's 'Notes in England and Italy', of 1871, though the date of the notes and the visit to St Botolph's was 26 May 1857: "a font of stone, richly sculptured, raised on a very broad pedestal of three wide, spreading steps." The Parish of Boston [www.parish-of-boston.org.uk/st_botolphs_history.html] [accessed 18 January 2007] informs that the font was placed at the west end of the nave in the 1929-1933 restoration. [NB: the fabric of the church goes back to the 14th century, Decorated period, but we have no information on the disappeared font of that period]
