Ellis (1902) mentions Backford as one of the churches in the Wirral without medieval font. The present font at St. Oswald's dates from ca. 1879 [source: "St. Oswald's Church in the Parish of Backford' by John Peter Hess (1998), in www.mollingtonvillages.co.uk]. An earlier font from this church is noted in Thornber: "Former font now in the churchyard" [source: www.thornber.net]. The font in the churchyard has an inscription around the side of the basin containing the date 1733 [NB: the church was re-done in 1728-1731, and again in the late 1870s; the font in the yard must therefore originate from the 18th-century renovation -- we have no information on the font from the original late-13th-century church].
