Font Notes:
There are two entries for Gaulby [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SK6901/gaulby/] [accessed 11 August 2015, neither of which mentions cleric or church in it. A font here is noted and illustrated in Upcott (1818). The Victoria County History (Leicestershire, vol. 5, 1964) notes: "Galby church was granted to the hospital of Burton Lazars by William Burdet before 1184. [...] The 12th-century church, which may have been built by William Burdet, has completely disappeared. The only part of the later building to survive the alterations of 1741 is the chancel, and this appears to date from the very end of the Gothic period. [...] The church was said to be in need of repair in 1776 when it lacked a font cover, royal arms, Creed and Commandment boards, a table of prohibited degrees, and a list of benefactions. [...] The font may date from 1741". Pevsner (1984) states: "Font and font cover. Probably of 1741". [NB: we have no information on font of the original late-12th century church here].
