Noted in Pevsner (1984): "Font. Small, circular, with four roll mouldings in the four main directions up to the rim. Probably C12/13." The Elmesthorpe Parish web site [http://members.aol.com/ggvicar/eschurch/images/elm2.jpg] [accessed 21 September 2006] shows a drwaing of the font with the caption: "The font at St. Mary Elmesthorpe. It was found in a garden in Barwell, and then the bowl part of the font was discovered to be a medieval mortar"; elsewhere in the same web page it is noted: "a historical expert says it was not originally a font but a mortar [...] from the 13th century, of a type from a monast[e]ry." [We are grateful to the Revd. Graham Gittings, Rector of Elmesthorpe, for the images of this font]
