There is an entry for Burton [Overy] [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SP6798/burton-overy/] [accessed 4 March 2015], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The Victoria County History (Leicestershire, vol. 5, 1964) notes: "In 1204 the church of Burton Overy belonged to the Norman monastery of St. Evroul (Orne), which may originally have obtained it from Hugh de Grentemesnil [i.e., Grandmesnil / Grentmesnil, 1032-1098], one of the monastery's founders. [...] The tower dates from the late 13th and early 14th centuries [...] The tapered circular font probably dates from the 13th century." No mention of it in Pevsner (1984). In Stephens (2000): "When the Normans arrived, they took over the church building they found there, and installed the tapered circular font which dates back to the 13th century. Fittingly, it still stands at the foot of the tower" [...] The heavy oak font cover [...] bears the inscription 'LW Foster, Rector, made me, 1960'. The wrought iron handle came from a previous vicarage gate" [source: www.burtonovery.info/pdf/AspectsofBurtonOvery.pdf] [accessed 20 September 2006]. The only ornamentation on the font is a thick roll moulding at the upper rim; this area shows clear traces of significant damage and later repair with new stone inserts.
