Baptismal font noted and illustrated in Upcott (1818). Richard Dunmore (2004) [www.applebymagna.org.uk/appleby_history/in_focus28.htm] [accessed 19 September 2006] notes on the restoration of 1829-1832: "Before restoration the font had been located in the north aisle by the north door [...] Now a new font, the gift of the Misses Moore, was placed to the east end of the north aisle behind the pulpit and near the entrance to the Bosworth chapel". In a later article Dumore (2005) [source: www.applebymagna.org.uk/appleby_history/in_focus29.htm] notes changes made to the interior of St Michael's in the Victorian restoration of 1870-1872: "Misses Moore's font ;...] now required more space and prominence, so its was moved to a central position at the west end of the nave in front of the main entrance, where it remains. Joseph Lilley built the new base, with steps, [i.e., plinth] on which it was mounted." [NB: Dunmore, in a communication to BSI [cf. BSI file, notes: "Sadly there remain no traces of any earlier font as the restorers did their work rather too well!] .
