Baptismal font probably from the date of the church itself, 1870; it consists of an octagonal basin with vertical sides decorated with pairs of trefoil windows/arches, the upper rim chamfered, the lower rim splaying; graded underbowl chamfer; moulded octagonal pedestal base. Octagonal wooden font cover, flat, with metal decorations and ring handle; contemporary. The Parish web site [www.thixendalechurch.co.uk/about.html] reports the existence in medieval times of a chapel-at-ease dedicated to St. Stephen here; it was, according to the same source, closed after 1541 [NB: we have no information on whether or not the chapel had baptismal functions].
