Font Notes:
Described in Glynne (1877) : "The font is an octagon, the basin painted and modernised, the pedestal panelled with figures of animals, &c." Noted in Newman (1980): "Font. Modern bowl on a Perp[endicular] base, wit symbols of the Evangelists squashed into the panels." A recent [2005] illustration of this font can be found in www.roughwood.net/ChurchAlbum//Kent/Goughurst/GoudhurstStMary2005.htm]. The octagonal base has an octagonal stem, its panels decorated alternately with the four symbols of the Evangelists and rosettes inscribed in trefoil arches; splaying lower end; the octagonal basin is a later replacement of the original, probably of the 19th century, done in the style of the Perpendicular period fonts: eight panels containg large quatrefoil motifs; the underbowl is graded. Octagonal font cover, flat with two moulded volumes.
