There are two entries for Sandwich [variant spellings] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TR3358/sandwich/] [accessed 13 July 2018], neither of which mentions priest or church in it. Cox & Harvey (1907) list a heraldic font at "Sandwich, Kent"; later (ibid.) they include a Perpendicular baptismal font at "Sandwich St. Mary" among the fonts of this period in the county. Newman (1976) writes: "Font. Perp[endicular], with the date 1662 cut on the stem." The entry for this church in Historic England [List entry Number: 1069541] explains the confusing font: "Font is octagonal, with quatrefoils on the bowl. Dated 1662 on the stem, but probably C15 re-erected after the Restoration. [...] The three parishes in Sandwich were amalgamated in 1948 and St Mary's went out of use. There were proposals to demolish it in 1956, but it was restored and vested in the Churches Conservation Trust in 1985." Paul Farmer's photograph of this font [www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1479634] [accessed 13 July 2018] is captioned: "The Font in St Mary's Church, Sandwich. The Font has on it, the Arms of France, quartering England; on another shield, a Merchants mark; on another, the Arms of the Cinque Ports; on the fourth the arms of ELLIS; the other sides, mouldings, etc. are ornamented with roses, satyrs heads, and niches."
