Font Notes:
No individual entry for Bolsterstone found in the Domesday survey. The octagonal baptismal font in neo-Perpendicular style is dated by an inscription to 1876, which is approximately the date of the new Church of St. Mary; the sides of the basin have heads, charged shields, (?) inscribed in deeply-carved quatrefoil-in-a-circle panels; graded underbowl chamfer with rosettes at the angles; trefoil panels and buttressed angles on the stem; moulded lower base. The older church probably dated from the 18th century, and earlier buildings existed probably as chapels-of-ease, some claimed as early as the 12th century, but documented only from the 14th. [NB: we have no information on the earlier font(s) of the eralier chapel/church in Bolsterstone, but the registry of baptisms goes back to 1736].
