There is an entry for Welford[-on-Avon] [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SP1452/welford-on-avon/] [accessed 14 January 2015], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Cox & Harvey (1907) list a baptismal font of the Norman period in this church [NB: C&H list it under Gloucs., the former county to which Welford belonged -- it is now in Warwickshire]. The Victoria County History (Warwick, vol. 5, 1949 ) notes: "The church of Welford belonged to Deerhurst Priory [...] and was valued in 1291 at £15, in addition to a pension of 20s. payable to Tewkesbury Abbey. [...] The nave and narrow aisles are of mid-to late-12thcentury date and probably the lowest part of the tower is of about the end of the same period [...] The font has a 13th-century round bowl with a rollmoulded lower edge and hollowed soffit in which are carved out of solid the capitals of four shafts that originally surrounded the stem. These shafts were replaced by 17th-century balusters. The base has a 13th-century edge-roll and the four bases of the original shafts; the sub-base is of two chamfered courses". The Parish web site [http://uk.geocities.com/harperp@btopenworld.com/ChurchStPeter/StPetersWelford13.htm] [accessed 6 May 2009] claims the font is of the mid-11th century. The same claim, but with reference to the church itself, is made in the Parish Council web site [www.welfordonavon-pc.gov.uk/welford-2884.cfm] [accessed 14 January 2015], where it is stated: "A church on this site has existed since 1059, when Welford was given by Sweyn, Earl of Gloucester, to the Saxon priory of Deer Hurst (on the Severn below Tewksbury). Monks from Deerhurst built a small church on the present site of Welford Church. All that remains of that Church is the bowl of the font. Between 1100 and 1170 a Norman Church was built to rep[la]ce the Saxon one."
