The Victoria County History (Lancaster, vol. 8, 1914) notes the modern font [cf. Index entry for Lancaster No. 1, and it mentions also "The bowl of an old plain octagonal stone font, 2 ft. 3 in. in diameter and 2 ft. high, was recovered some years ago from the vicarage garden, and is now in a recess at the west end of the nave." A photograph by Opalpics [www.flickr.com/photos/64907971@N00/150458163] of what appears to be a plain octagonal basin with a badly damaged upper rim is labeled 'Saxon Font" and the location is given as "Lancaster Priory Church" in the source. It is certainly not a Saxon font, but it may be medieval. The Lancaster Priory & Parish Church web site [www.priory.lancs.ac.uk] illustrates the "Saxon doorway and part of the west wall [...] thought to be all that remains of a church built by the Saxon inviders after their conversion to Christianity" -- this same illustration shows an "early octagonal font [...] found in the vicarage garden". [NB: all other fonts in Lancaster churches are modern]
