INFORMATION

FontID: 11991CRO
Church/Chapel: Parish Church of St. Mary Magdalene
Church Patron Saints: St. Mary Magdalene
Country Name: England
Location: Oxfordshire, South East
Directions to Site: Located near Wallingford
Ecclesiastic Region: Diocese of Oxford
Century and Period: 11th - 12th century, Norman
Noted in Sherwood and Pevsner (1974): "Font. Norman, circular, with a blind arcade of spiral fluted columns." But this baptismal font is probably of the 19th century, the cylindrical basin covered in pseudo-Norman ornamentation; raised on a cluster of three (?) columns. The font must date from one of the two restorations the church underwent in the 19th century [unless it is the old font totally re-carved?]
