Font Notes:
Described and illustrated in The Corpus of Romanesque Sculpture in Britain and Ireland (2008) as a baptismal font probably of the early 13th century: "plain, lead-lined cup-shaped font on a late-medieval pedestal and plinth. The surface has been retooled, and there is a clear line between the lower (spherical) and upper (cylindrical) parts of the bowl. There is a slight chamfer on the rim." The CRSBI (ibid.) adds that the font "could concivably belong to the 12thc, but this is extremely unlikely, if only because of its small size" [cf. Measurements below]. The stem of the base is octagonal with mouldings, the lower end square; base probably 14th-century; raised on an irregular stone as plinth. The modern font cover consists of a round flat wooden base on which stand a low metal construction of four-ribs-around-a-pivot in the style of the old Jacobean fonts.
