There are three entries for [North and South] Hayling [Island] [variant spellings] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/XX0000/north-and-south-hayling-island/] [accessed 20 June 2018], none of which mentions priest or church in it. The entry for this church in the Victoria County History (Hampshire, 3, 1908) notes: "Nothing in the building seems to be older than the end of the twelfth century, the north arcade of the nave being probably of this date, while nearly every other detail in the church belongs to the early part of the thirteenth century. [...] font stands in the third bay of the south arcade, and has a round tapering bowl without a stem. The top edge of the bowl is scalloped, but this seems to be a modern adornment, though the font itself may be of the thirteenth century. On the capital of the pillar against which it stands is a fifteenth-century stone bracket." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SU7319203677] reports a "Stone tub font, with pyramid 8 panelled wooden cover" in it. Noted in the Historic Churches Preservation Trust, Recent Grants [...] 16 March 2006 [www.historicchurches.org.uk]: "Font--old as the church" [NB: this same source dates the church to 1140]
