Font Notes:
There is an entry for this Wigginton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SP9310/wigginton/] [accessed 20 September 2016] but it mentions no cleric or church in it; the over-lordship in 1066, however, was in the hands of one Engelric, the priest, which may suggest there may have been a church in it [Engelric the priest appears as lord or over-lord in five places: Dunsley, Gubblecote, Pendley, Tring and Wigginton]. The Victoria County History (Hertfordshire, vol. 2, 1908) notes: "The church of Wigginton appears to have been in early times in the hands of the priors of the hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England, for in 1217 Geoffrey de Lucy, lord of the manor, sued the prior for the advowson, claiming it as he claimed the manor, through his wife Juliana.[...] There is nothing by which the date of the original building [...] The font is modern, standing at the west end of the north aisle". The font probably dates from the 1881 restoration of the earlier church [NB: we have no information on the earlier font].
