There are two entres for Shipton [-on-Cherwell] [variant spellings] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SP4716/shipton-on-cherwell/] [accessed 29 November 2017], neither of which mentions priest or church in it. The baptismal font in this church consists of a tub-shaped basin, plain and round, raised on a modern base; the basin shows evidence of repair work, especially on the upper side, probably where the old iron staples of the cover had been; the flat wooden cover is plain and is relatively modern. The Victoria County History, Oxfordshire (1990) notes that "there was a church at Shipton-on-Cherwell by the later 12th century" and that "the first recorded rector was Richard, priest of Shipton, c. 1185", all of which dates are consistant with the appearance of the basin. [NB: the VCH entry for Shipton-on-Cherwell does not mention a font in this entry, but in the entry for Hampton Gay (Oxford, vol. 6, 1959) it states: "The font, which originally belonged to the church of Shipton-on-Cherwell, is modern." [NB: this last entry is footnoted "MS. Top. Oxon. d 90, f. 39", a reference to a collection of original drawings of fonts and churches at the Bodleian Library, Oxford]. Not mentioned in Sherwood & Pevsner (1974). [cf. Index entry for Hampton Gay, Oxon, for a late font said to be from this church]. The entry for this church in the Bristish Listed Buildings [Listing NGR: SP4802516520] notes: "C11 tub font reset on late C19 piers".
