Additional Comments: altered font / composite font? (the pedestal base appears to be of a later date) -- damaged font: badly cracked/broken horizontally through the middle
Font Notes:
Noted in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments, Hertforshire (1911): "Font: Purbeck marble bowl, 13th-century." Listed in Leach (1975) as a font made of Purbeck marble' "clunch pedestal is 15th century" [NB: Leach has it as "Furneaux Pelham"]. In Pevsner & Cherry (1977): "Font: Octagonal, C13, of Purbeck marble, with shallow blank pointed arches." The basin is raised on n octagonal pedestal base of later date; it is moulded at the top, has panels on the sides (some trefoiled, some plain rectangular); the splaying lower base is also octagonal. There is a horizontal crack through the middle of the basin; it has been crudely repaired with cement (?).
