There is an entry for Cottered [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TL3129/cottered/] [accessed 20 October 2016], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Lewis' Dictionary of 1848 mentions "a beautiful marble font" in this church. Noted in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments, Hertforshire (1911): "Font: of grey Derbyshire marble, c. 1700." The Victoria County History (Hertford, vol. 3, 1912) notes: "The advowson of the church of Cottered was held in the reign of Henry II [1154-1189] by Jordan Chamberlain, lord of the manor of Cottered [...] The chancel, nave, with south porch and west tower, were built about 1350; the north chapel and the roof and windows of the nave belong to the 15th and the north vestry to the 16th century. [...] The font, which dates from about 1700, is of grey Derbyshire marble and has a moulded circular basin, decorated with scallops, resting on a circular moulded stem." In Pevsner & Cherry (1977): "Font. 1739, of lovely grey Derbyshire marble, with baluster stem and flutted bowl." [NB: we have no information on the earlier font of this church, which goes back to the 12th century]
