There is an entry for Ardeley [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TL3027/ardeley/] [accessed 19 October 2016], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The Royal Commission on Historical Monuments, Hertforshire (1911) notes: "Font: octagonal, of rough workmanship, probably early 15th-century; cover, early 17th-century." The Victoria County History (Hertford, vol. 3, 1912) notes: "In the 13th century the church probably consisted of a chancel and nave only. The nave, the oldest portion of the church now remaining, was in existence early in the 13th century [...] The font is octagonal and the workmanship is rough, dating probably from the early 15th century, while the cover is of the early 17th century." In Pevsner & Cherry (1977): "Font: Octagonal, with big faces in the four diagonals. The date is difficult to determine; probably C14."
