Noted in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (Essex, 1916-1923): "Stoup: In nave--E. of S. doorway, with chamfered jambs and trefoiled head, 14th or 15th-century." [NB: the fabric of this church goes back to the 14th century but we have no information on the original font of this church -- the RCHM informs that "the church suffered severely in the earthquake of 1884 and was drastically restored in 1893"]. [NB: the church of Virley is now in ruins; said to have been damaged in the Colchester earthquake of 1884; the nearby Church of St. Mary, in Salcott, was also damaged in the said earthquake, but was extensively re-built in the 1890s].
