Font Notes:
Noted with an illustration in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (Essex, 1916-1923): "Font:octagonal bowl with concave sides, modern stem and moulded base, mortises for staples on rim of bowl, mid 15th-century." Bettley & Pevsner (2007) report an "octagonal font with tall wooden cover" in the new church, but suggest no date. [NB: the font was originally from old St. Peter's, redundant since 1970, and in the care of the Friends of Friendless Churches in 1975; the RCHM notes that the fabric of the old church goes back to the 11th century, but we have no information on the earlier font(s) of that church]. The font and an old holy-water stoup were moved from St. Peter's, the medieval church, to St. Bartholomew, the new mid-19th century church.
