There are four entries for this Garton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SE9859/garton-on-the-wolds/] [accessed 20 July 2014], one of which, in the lordship and tenancy of Count Robert of Mortain in 1086 (Asulf in 1066), reports a priest and a church in it. Although the Norman fabric of St. Michael & All Angels' dates to the 1130s, the baptismal font in use now [2006] in this church is a Victorian replacement, probably dating to the restoration of this church directed by Street [English architect George Edmund Street (1824-1881)]; it consists of an octagnal basin with plain vertical sides raised on a central shaft with attached colonnettes at the angles, and a second set of eights detached colonnettes on the outside of the former; octagonal lower base; plain round wooden cover, plus a very tall font cover of open-work decorated with figures, tracery, pinnacles, etc., that is raised by a pulley system. [NB: we have no information on the original font(s) of this church].
