There is an entry for this Hatfield in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TL5416/hatfield-broad-oak/] [accessed 16 May 2018]; it mentions a church in it. Only the font cover is noted in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (Essex, 1916-1923): "of oak, each side with cinquefoiled headand tracery, moulded standards. pyramidal spire with open traceried sides, made up of various fragments, 15th and 18th-century; recently purchased from a dealer" [NB: the RCHM does not list any materials from post-1714, and we have no information on the earlier font(s) of this church]. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Essex, vol. 8, 1983) notes: "A church probably existed on the present site before the Conquest [...] The font, made in 1897, is an enlarged facsimile of the 15th-century one at Magdalen Laver. Its cover, made up of 15th-and 18th-century fragments of oak, was added in 1908." The present font appears modern, but of standard Perpendicular design: octagonal, with quatrefoiled panels on the basin sides, floral motifs on the underbowl chamfer, and trefoiled panels on the stem. The wooden cover is octagonal, of open-work [cf. supra]
